Boot World’s Dr. Martens Shoes
Dr. Martens shoes combine high-performance durability with iconic, eclectic style, notably the signature sole, recognizable pull tab, and yellow stitching that let it stand out amidst the crowd of other footwear. In 1945, Dr. Klaus Maertens invented the famous “bouncing sole” in Munich after suffering a broken foot and needing extra assistance. Unlike traditional leather soles, these air-cushioned soles provide enhanced support, comfort, and exterior slip resistance. His partnership with the English Griggs company resulted in the first yellow-seamed Dr. Martens boots.
Over the course of the next 80 years, the brand changed from being primarily known as Doc Martens work boots to a central part of the punk rock aesthetic and onto the beloved, versatile brand it is today. While Dr. Martens still stocks a number of its original designs, the brand has evolved with the times to maintain its reputation for design at the cutting edge of culture, although the distinct yellow stitching remains constant. Today, men and women can find sandals and platforms alongside boots and oxfords.
With metallics, vegan leather, studs, and designer collaborations, Dr. Martens designs shoes for every aesthetic. But as their stock of designs changes and grows, the same comfort and durability remain, making them consistently sought after safety boots.
Are Doc Martens Industrial Work Boots?
Some people may be surprised to find out that the shoes most people wear to accentuate their style are actually ready-made work boots. Dr. Martens come stocked with an incredibly durable exterior that can easily withstand rough work environments (if cared for correctly). They’re also perfect for environments where water will be present since their specially designed outsole dissipates fluids on impact to provide traction.
Find Your Perfect Fit
Dr. Martens shoes come in whole sizes only. If you wear a half-size, order a size up: if you wear an 8.5, generally order a 9, etc. If your shoes feel too roomy, try a thicker pair of socks to help you fill out the extra width of the work boot, or use a thicker or 3/4 length additional insole.
Leather and vegan leather shoes are initially stiff and require a breaking-in period, but once they are broken in, nothing compares to the comfort that you'll feel from the innovative insole, supple lining, and padded collar. To speed up the process:
-
Wear thick, comfortable socks whenever you put on your Docs
-
Wear your shoes around the house for a few minutes or hours at a time
-
Start with small excursions outside: don’t take your Doc Marten boots out for the first time on a long hike
Over time, your shoes will begin to conform to your foot and feel comfortable on longer walks.
Care and Maintenance
Dr. Martens shoes are incredibly durable and can be enhanced with Doc Marten Wonder Balsam for add protection. To make sure your Docs last for as long as possible, take the following steps:
-
Spray shoes to protect against dirt, rain, and UV
-
Remove laces before cleaning to prevent damage and decay
-
Clean regularly (once a month) according to the material care instructions
