Sure, your UGG boots already show that you have great taste, but some extra TLC on your winter boots is needed to keep them looking great against those stubborn stains.

Treat Them with Care

Different types of UGG products require different care. What works for one type of UGG slippers to get scuff marks and stubborn stains out may not work for another. It boils down to getting to know your UGG footwear and what it’s made of.

There are three main types of UGG shoes: Twin face sheepskin, sheepskin with suede on top, and smooth leather. Let’s dive into the details of UGG slippers and their ideal cleaning solutions.

UGG Care for Twin Face Sheepskin & Sheepskin with Suede

UGG only uses the highest-grade sheepskin. Both the fleece on the inside and the skin on the outside (twin face sheepskin) are natural, which is one of the main reasons why UGGs are so famously soft and comfortable. Since the soft sheepskin outer material is similar to suede, both twin face sheepskin (like on UGG Classics) and sheepskin covered in suede (like on this Koolaburra by UGG boot) can be cleaned in nearly the same way with UGG sheepskin cleaner. The UGG boot needs to be protected from the get-go with a UGG protector and cleaned with care over time. Here’s how to clean UGG boots and how to clean the inside of UGGS:

New, clean sheepskin footwear should be sprayed on the outside with UGG Sheepskin Protectant Spray or Burleigh Spray, both available at Boot World. This way, water will most likely fall right off the winter boots and won’t get absorbed into the material.

Over time, debris from the environment can build up on sheepskin and suede. It’s a good idea to periodically brush your twin-face sheepskin boots with a super soft brush (as soft as you would use on a baby), and reapply the protectant spray. For suede-covered sheepskin, a suede brush is fine to use for this step. A suede brush is not appropriate for sheepskin, though - look for a brush specifically designed for sheepskin footwear. Check your boots regularly to see if debris is starting to accumulate. The wetter your environment, the more frequently you should brush and spray for clean UGGS.

If you find debris getting stuck on the outer material of your UGGs, give them some TLC by cleaning them with UGG Cleaner and Conditioner. Allow them to dry for 24 hours, then brush and re-spray them for some clean UGGS.

Caring for UGG Shoes with Smooth Leather

Whether polished or mottled, smooth leather has to stay conditioned to keep it from drying out. Once the leather fibers become dry and cracked, the damage can’t be undone. That’s why conditioning leather is perhaps the most important step in UGG cleaner care. How you do that depends on the material. Shiny leather can take actual shoe polish, whereas mottled leather can’t. Both types of leather need a bit of oil once in a while, too, especially if worn in wet conditions.

Polishable leather: If the leather is dry to the touch, use Bick 4 conditioner. If you want high shine, use more of a paste polish. If color is your priority and shine isn’t as important, use a cream polish that contains more oils.

Mottled/Work leather: Simply oil it with Bick 4 conditioner for a rich oil and more protection.

Removing Stubborn Stains

Here's a quick guide on how to remove these common stains:

Salt Stains:

Salt stains are a common issue, especially during the winter months. To remove them, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and gently blot the salt-stained areas. Ensure you don't soak the boots; just lightly dab the stains. Once done, allow your UGGs to air dry naturally, and then brush them gently with a suede or sheepskin brush to restore their soft texture.

Water Stains:

Water stains can leave dark marks on your UGGs. Start by wetting the entire boot uniformly with a clean sponge or cloth. This ensures that any water stains don't leave uneven marks. Then, stuff the boots with newspaper to help them maintain their shape while they dry. Allow them to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Once dry, gently brush the boots with a suede or sheepskin brush to fluff up the nap.

Mud Stains:

If your UGGs encounter mud, allow the mud to dry completely. Then, use a soft brush to remove as much dried mud as possible. Afterward, mix a small amount of mild detergent with warm water and gently clean the stained areas with a soft cloth. Rinse the cloth and wipe away any soap residue. Allow your UGGs to air dry naturally, and don't forget to brush them afterward to maintain their plush appearance.
